Applying for PhD studies at LBTU

If You have master's degree and would like to start PhD studies (full time) at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, You need to take into account a few application steps:

Step 1: Choose PhD study programme

Choose PhD study programme in accordance with the obtained master's education. Open description of the study programme, carefully read the admission requirements!

Step 2: List of documents

You can apply round the year, for PhD admission You will need the following documents:

A copy of passport;

Copy of documents that state Your previous education (diploma and transcript) in original language, notarized translation must be provided if the document is not in Latvian or English. The average grade at the previous level of education shall not be less than 60% of the maximum.

Copy of a document stating Your English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, DET, etc.):

IELTS – (5.5 score)

TOEFL IBT – (72 points)

TOEFL PBT – (513 points)

TOEIC – (605 points)

FCE (First Certificate in English) – (160 points)

CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English) – (160 points)

CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English) – (160 points)

Cambridge English: Business Vantage (BEC Vantage) – (160 points)

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE A) – (51 points)

Cambridge English Linguaskill – (160 points)

Duolingo (100 points).

Copy of a receipt confirming the payment of the application fee:

160 EUR - for foreign applicants (non-refundable);

300 EUR - for applicants from countries that require a visa or residence permit to reside in the Republic of Latvia (the list of states You will find here: https://likumi.lv/ta/en/en/id/212364) (non-refundable).

The application process must be completed in full, incomplete applications will not be considered.

Application fee is non-refundable, You will need to cover the costs of bank charges incurred.

Step 3: Education documents recognition in Academic Information Centre

After submitting all documents, according to legislation of the Republic of Latvia, LBTU Doctoral School will send Your education documents to Academic Information Centre (AIC, www.aic.lv) for recognition. You will be informed about decision electronically, process can take 3-4 weeks. If will be a positive decision from AIC, You will continue the admission process.

It is not necessary to send documents to AIC:
● if the foreign student has obtained master's education in the language of implementation of      the relevant study programme;

● if the foreign student has obtained master's education in European Union or European Economic Area country or in the Swiss Confederation and has B2 level of language.

Step 4: Acceptance from director of the study programme

All submitted documents Doctoral School will send to the director of the study programme for reviewing. After director acceptance You need to submit following documents:

1. Recommendation letter from scientific advisor;

2. Application for PhD studies https://www.lbtu.lv/en/doctoral-study-programmes;

3. Curriculum Vitae;

4. An overview of funding sources for non EU citizens (for tuition fees, costs of living and research costs) 8880 EUR (may change).

Step 5: Acceptance letter from Doctoral School

If all requirements will be fulfilled, Doctoral School will send You an Acceptance letter, Study agreement for PhD studies, Rental agreement of LBTU dormitory accommodation and You will need to pay:

  • Tuition fee for the first year (depending on PhD programme)
  • Study deposit 500 EUR (after graduation You will get it back)
  • 1st month fee for dormitory 127 EUR and dormitory deposit 100 EUR (refundable), in total - 227 EUR (may change).

Step 6: Entry into Latvia
