QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025

On December 5, 2024, the results of the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025 were published. Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) ranked in the 1201–1250 range globally out of 1,744 universities, 440th in Europe out of 556 universities, and 3rd among Latvian universities included in the ranking.

The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability evaluates universities across three main categories: Environmental Impact (environmental education, environmental research, and environmental sustainability), Social Impact (employment and opportunities, equality, health and well-being, educational impact, and knowledge exchange), and Governance (good governance).

Overall, LBTU ranked in the 1201–1250 range. The highest score was achieved in the Governance category – 69.3 points (659th place), followed by Environmental Impact – 38.3 points (1001+ rank), and Social Impact – 30.9 points (1001+ rank).

LBTU also achieved notable results in several subcategories, such as Environmental Education – 56.5 points (506th place), Educational Impact – 40.8 points (1001+ rank), and Equality – 37.3 points (1001+ rank).

This year, the University of Toronto was recognized as the world’s leading university in sustainability, surpassing the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, which ranked second. The University of California, Berkeley (UCB) led sustainability efforts in the United States, sharing third place globally with Lund University in Sweden. From Latvia, five universities were included in the ranking: the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, LBTU, Riga Stradiņš University, and the Transport and Telecommunication Institute.

LBTU is one of Latvia's leading multidisciplinary scientific universities specializing in the sustainable use of natural resources. Research at the university and its associated scientific institutes is conducted in three main directions: life sciences, engineering sciences, and social sciences. The higher education programs offered at the university are closely linked to research and span all levels of study, from bachelor’s and master’s degrees to doctoral studies.
