OECD representatives visit LBTU to discuss the development of doctoral education
On November 20, a meeting with representatives from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was held at Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) in Jelgava. This visit was part of the project "Support for the Institutional Implementation of a New Academic Career Framework in Latvia," funded by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM).
The project aims to provide support from the OECD Higher Education Policy Team and international experts to the Ministry of Education and Science of Latvia, universities, and research institutions to promote innovative approaches in the development of academic careers, including doctoral education.
During the visit, the OECD team—Dr. Gillian Golden, Kristiana Egle, and doctoral education expert Dr. Alexander Hasgall—met with LBTU leadership, representatives of the Doctoral School, deans of LBTU faculties, directors of doctoral programs, institute directors, and other interested parties. The discussions focused on LBTU's strategic areas of specialization, research priorities, and human resource challenges. The plans for the development of a new Doctoral School at LBTU were also analyzed, considering the requirements of the doctoral education reform.
The main topics discussed during the meeting included:
- Successful examples of developing doctoral programs in small and specialized universities,
- Challenges in developing new doctoral programs in LBTU’s specialized fields,
- Extension of study time due to work commitments and possible solutions,
- Building effective supervisory capacity and improving collaboration between doctoral candidates and their supervisors.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to share experiences, analyze current challenges, and receive recommendations from international experts. The outcomes will strengthen not only LBTU but also contribute to the competitiveness and sustainability of Latvian academic education.
The project "Support for the Institutional Implementation of a New Academic Career Framework in Latvia" focuses on the development of the higher education system, especially the implementation of doctoral education reforms. The project helps strengthen the international competitiveness of Latvian universities, promotes innovation, and contributes to the development of the academic environment.
