LLU men's team wins 3rd place in Latvian XXVII Universiade tournament in rugby - 7
Last weekend, October 30th, Latvian XXVII Universiade tournament in rugby – 7 was held at the Riga Technical College sports field (Braslas street 16). Rugby-7 in Universiade has been included only since 2012 when the LLU won the 1st place. This year LLU team demonstrated their athletic spirit and perseverance and won honourable 3rd place.
This year the weather wasn’t very encouraging but despite the cold and wind, five universities took part in the tournament – Riga Technical College (RTK), Latvian Academy of Sport Education (LSPA), Riga Technical University (RTU), Latvian University (LU) and Latvia University of Agriculture (LUU).
This year rugby – 7 was held for the fifth time, proving the fact that every year this sport is becoming more popular among Latvian higher education institutions and it helps and motivates young athletes not only to be the best among universities but also prepares them for the national team. The rally is open to all students from any of the Latvian higher education institutions as well as previous year’s graduates.
The tournament was organized by the Rugby Development Association (Regbija Attīstības Asociācija (RAA)), www.regbijs.eu and Latvian universities sports union. The main judge of the tournament was the head coach of Latvian student rugby - 7 team at XXVII World Universiade (Kazan, Russia) Arvis Pilenieks.
