In spring 2016th the play “Helmuts and Hellija” made by choreographer Maija Ozoliņa had its premiere at LLU Student theater. On the evening of September 22nd the same play was produced/staged in English.
The play “Helmuts un Hellija” is a Latvian author’s work which originally was written in English and after translated and produced in Latvian. In spring Latvian Amateur Theatre Association (LATA) nominated this play for “SHORT PLAY FESTIVAL – 2016” which will take place in the Faroe Islands in Denmark from 5th to 9th October.
The producer of the play is Astra Kacena and the cast consists of actors like Inguna Strode and Agris Sinijs. The author of the play currently lives in Preston. While living in the UK she has studied drama art and drama. The cooperation with the author has been developed in other plays – Fr. Molnars “Liliom” (1991), E. Junesko “Bare-headed singer” (1994), atc.
“While preparing for the festival we decided to perform play in English. During summer few experiment rehearsals were held with the help of National Culture Fund, LLU and Jelgava City council. During rehearsals the actors and producers realized the unthinkable – how hard ir is to think and feel in one language and act in another!” says producer of the play Astra Kacena.
The first people to see the play on the 22nd of September were citizens of Jelgava and LLU Erasmus+ foreign students. A.Kacena said the most enthusiastic viewers were Erasmus+ students who shared their impressions after the show. What made the atmosphere even more enjoyable was the leading actresses hand-made chocolate, made after ancient Indian recipe.
