Official launch of the The Ministry of Education and Science - created calendar and traveling exhibition "Science for Latvia 2025"
The Ministry of Education and Science (MofEd) officially launched its "Science for Latvia 2025" calendar. As a significant science communication tool, this calendar brings together Latvian researchers and scientists for the eighth time, showcasing their achievements that contribute to the international recognition of Latvian science. Alongside the calendar’s unveiling, a traveling exhibition was also inaugurated, which will continue to promote Latvian science to a broader audience.
Complementing each other, the "Science for Latvia 2025" calendar unites 12 leading Latvian scientific institutions. Their remarkable achievements in research affirm the country’s significant role in the European Research Area as well as the global scientific community. The 12 featured scientists—six women and six men—through their unique research work contribute to the development of interdisciplinary national and global science centers.
The 2025 calendar also highlights Ph.D. Rūta Ozola-Davidāne, Associate Tenured Professor at the Faculty of Forest and Environmental Sciences, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU).
Since autumn 2024, Rūta has been an Associate Tenured Professor at the Institute of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Engineering. Before that, she was a leading researcher, project manager, and lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Latvia. She has always been interested in water research, wastewater treatment, and has focused her studies on these areas. At LBTU, together with her colleagues, she works on water protection, wastewater treatment, and soil decontamination, using nature-based solutions like phytoremediation and artificial wetlands.
In addition to the story about Ph.D. Rūta Ozola-Davidāne, the calendar also introduces other scientists: Dr. phil. Raivis Bičevskis (University of Latvia), Dr. sc. ing. Sergejs Gaidukovs (Riga Technical University), Dr. biol. Renāte Ranka (Riga Stradiņš University), Dr. art. Diāna Zandberga (Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music), Art. D. Ansis Rozentāls (Latvian Academy of Arts), Ph.D. Baiba Tjarvi (Latvian Academy of Culture), Dr. sc. pol. Tomass Rostoks (Latvian National Defence Academy), Mg. sc. comp. Karina Šķirmante (Ventspils University of Applied Sciences), Ph.D. Oskars Javs (Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences), Dr. biol. Artūrs Škute (Daugavpils University), and Mg. art., Mg. soc. Dagnija Baltiņa (Latvian National Library).
At the "Science for Latvia 2025" opening ceremony, for the first time, the MofEd's science communication platform researchLatvia presented the Member of researchLatvia certificate. The 12 scientific institutions featured in the calendar, including LBTU, received this certificate as recognition for their significant role in the development of Latvian science.
In parallel, the "Science for Latvia 2025" traveling exhibition was opened at the JVLMA premises, where it will be on display until January 29. Throughout the year, the exhibition will be presented at higher education institutions and other public and cultural venues across Latvia.
